![]() Like literally all information was given to you, such as which enemy goes first and what they will do. Into The Breach's big idea was information. I also disagree with the Into The Breach comparison. I think ironically, at least for me, Crowsworn looks like the best of that bunch, despite it looking the most similar lol. To be fair, yes there have been tons of mediocre looking HK inspired shit. Shit even the genre is way off, when usually people shit on the metroidvania aspect. Other than that I gotta say y'all are going out the way and nitpicking. If you want good action platformer, try Bloodstained Curse Of The Moon.Honestly, out of all the HK inspired stuff, I really don't see the resemblance other than the eyes of the mask. Hey, don’t let me stop you from enjoying the game if you like it. By the end of it, you don’t feel like a better gamer for finishing the game, rather you feel unsatisfied. It is not satisfying and feels unfulfilling. It has geeky, nerdy and jerky grooves and moves, almost laughable if it wasn’t so cringe to watch. There is rhythm and motion and the combat in Shovel Knight is akin to an awkward white guy in a dance club. ![]() The levels are not there to challenge you, rather it’s there to halt your progress on purpose, slows down you playthrough to mask it’s lack of content.Ĭombat too, is designed the same way. This cheap level design is a way to mask the short and uninteresting level design for each stage. In a platform sense, it’s not hard but it’s just filled with cheap deaths designed to get you because the player cannot predict what is going to happen next, such as falling down a level only to land on insta-kill floor which you won’t know it’s there unless you’ve been there before. This is in stark contrast to the really fine controls you get with games such as Celeste and Hollow Knight, where you can exactly move, stop, jump and land where you intend to. This has to do with Shovel Knight accelerating way too fast from a standstill, and controlling SK in mid-air or when pogo-ing becomes unwieldy. You will find that often you’re fighting against the controls during platforming to jump and land precisely where you want. Enemies are aggravating rather than challenging.Īs stated, the controls is just not good enough. It’s not terrible but it’s really just meh. Rather than challenging, the levels are cheesy.ģ. It’s literally a case of players’ “Oh how did I not predict that ahead of time” design philosophy. The hit box and hit detection is way too small making platforming, jumping and evading more of a hindrance.Ģ. Everything is great except for the gameplay.ġ. The game even has a well-told story with a lively and memorable cast of characters. The graphics really nailed retro 8-bit in the best of sense colorful, vibrant, detailed and immersive. The music is top-notch chiptune energetic, enthusiastic and thematically coherent. It’s a shame really because Shovel Knight nailed a lot of things right. Graphics are colorful, vibrant and well animated.ģ. It is an indication that my assessment is more correct than not. However, looking at the achievements, 76% of purchasers did not in fact finished the game which is an indication of a game with a lot of hype but does not have the substance to back it up. ![]() Depending on your level of tolerance, you may find much enjoyment and you may click with this kind of gameplay. On top of that, the controls are just sub-par compared to Shovel Knights contemporaries such as Celeste, Hollow Knight, Metroid Dread, Bloodstained Curse Of The Moon, and even remastered games such as Wonder Boy And The Dragon’s Trap has better controls. Ever tried to run or jog 10 miles with rocks in your shoes, well, this is how it feels like in video game format. The level is designed with cheap deaths to stop you every step of the way instead of a having continuous motion and progress. In fact, Yacht Club went out of their way to make their game flow like rocks in your shoes. It certainly has the look and the sound of a retro 8-bit game but old school action platform – such as Megaman, Contra, Ninja Gaiden and the like – has a flow to the game that Shovel Knight just does not have. I know this game has fans but in my opinion this game doesn’t elicit the kind of old school nostalgia feel the same classic action platform games of the past. ![]() Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove Game Review by PunkHazard ![]()
